US President-elect Joe Biden intends to nominate California Attorney General Xavier Becerra for the position of Minister of Health and Human Services, adding another Latino member to his team, which is largely distinguished by its diversity, US media reported on Sunday.
As a congressman, Becerra was an outspoken advocate for the rights of ethnic Latin Americans and a staunch advocate of former President Barack Obama’s health care program that came under heavy attack from outgoing President Donald Trump and the Republicans.
NBC, The New York Times, and other media quoted unnamed sources close to the president-elect, that there is a tendency to nominate Becerra for this new position.
The 62-year-old Becerra served as a California state attorney in 2016, succeeding Vice President-elect Kamala Harris after being elected to the Senate. Becerra was the first Hispanic person to hold this position.
While in office, Becerra also defended the “Dhaka” immigrant rights program before the Supreme Court.
And if Becerra is installed in the position of Minister of Health, he will have to lead the ministry in light of the Covid-19 pandemic that has killed more than 282,000 people in the United States.
Biden Rochelle Walsky has been nominated to lead the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the government health agency, the Wall Street Journal, and the New York Times has announced.
Walinsky is currently director of the Department of Infectious Diseases at Massachusetts State Hospital and a professor of medicine at Harvard University.
And replace Robert Redfield, director of the Centers for Disease Control, which came under pressure from Trump and his allies over virus prevention guidelines.
For the third consecutive day, the United States recorded a daily record of HIV infections, which reached nearly 230,000 cases, according to a census by Johns Hopkins University.
Biden has emphasized his pursuit of diversity in selecting his team when he takes office in January.
Biden announced earlier that Alejandro Mayorcas, who is of Cuban origin, has been chosen to fill the position of Minister of Homeland Security.
