United state: A wedding in the time of Corona kills 7 people and injures 177 in America

A wedding ceremony held last month in the small US state of Maine, near Canada, turned into a major epicenter of the outbreak of Covid-19, which caused seven deaths and at least 177 injuries, as a reminder of the dangers of the virus in an area that was thought to have passed the worst stages of the pandemic.

The wedding took place on August 7, with the participation of 65 people, which in itself contravenes the officially permitted maximum of 50.

After the religious ceremonies held at a Baptist church, the invitees went to a reception that was held at the “Big Banana” inn, two locations close to the small town of Millinocket of four thousand.

Ten days later, tests showed that 24 people related to this wedding were infected with the new Coronavirus, which prompted the CDC in Maine to open an investigation.

The director of the center, Nirav Shah, announced Thursday a new outcome, showing that at least 177 people were injured, and seven died, “none of whom were physically present” at the wedding.

Through the tracking process, it was found that there are many epidemics associated with the wedding in various regions of Maine, including one that recorded more than 80 injuries, which is a prison, located 370 kilometers from the scene of the event, whose guard was present at the wedding, and ten possible cases in a Baptist church. Another was in the same area, and 39 injuries and six deaths were at an elderly shelter about 160 kilometers from Millinocket.

This outbreak came to distract the joy of the people of the town and its region after the separation measures that were adopted at the beginning of the pandemic were eased, in the belief that the virus has become a thing of the past.

“When we learned what happened, everyone took a stone again (…) and we closed everything in town,” said council president Cody McEwen.

Some residents clearly expressed their anger at the wedding organizers, including the hostel, whose license was temporarily withdrawn.

“They shouldn’t have had this wedding,” said Nina O’Briques of the Baptist Church. “They should have contented themselves with inviting 50 people according to the measures to be adopted,” adding, “We can no longer go anywhere nor do anything.”

Maine Governor Janet Meles sent a warning message Thursday to the 1.3 million inhabitants of this small agricultural state, whose infection rate has not yet exceeded 0.6.

She said that the outbreak of the pandemic in this way “threatens to torpedo all the progress that has been achieved,” adding that “Covid-19 is not on the other side of the gate, it is inside our garden.”

Since the beginning of the pandemic, many incidents have been recorded in the world that has contributed to the spread of infections intensively and rapidly, the first of which was a conference last February for a biotechnology company in Boston, in the United States, in which 175 people were participating, and a funeral in Georgia in which more than 100 people were infected with the virus.

The concentration of large numbers of injuries was observed in some universities in recent weeks, which accelerated the return of students to their homes.
