A recent report issued by a US research institute affiliated with the US National Defense University said that North Korea possesses up to 60 nuclear warheads.
The institute said in a report of its strategic assessment for the year 2020 that it expects North Korea to possess between 15 and 60 nuclear warheads and about 650 ballistic missiles that would enable it to threaten cities in South Korea, Japan, and eastern China.
“Through the development of weapons of mass destruction, the use of chemical weapons, and the aggressive situation of its forces, North Korea threatens the stability of the region and global norms,” the report said.
The report added, “North Korea has tested ICBMs that enable it to hit the United States.”
The report pointed out that there are estimates that 1.2 million North Korean soldiers “are deployed in the demilitarized zone in an offensive position”, and they still pose a traditional threat to South Korea and Japan.
Pyongyang has been selling and exchanging military technology with Iran, which helped it develop ballistic missile programs.
The report added that “currency counterfeiting and drug trafficking have helped the North Korean regime to raise funds and deal with the impact of sanctions.”
