US authorities along the Mexico border have arrested nearly 1,000 unaccompanied migrant children within six days, according to government statistics provided by a federal court.

Between November 18 and 23, Customs and Border Protection agents arrested 997 minor immigrants who had traveled without their parents or legal guardians, said the agency’s chief official, Mark Morgan.

Morgan added that more than 9,900 unaccompanied children have been detained since September 8.

Within the next 120 days, the Customs and Border Protection office expects to increase border crossings by unaccompanied minors by 50 percent.
