The Indonesian police said that six people believed to be supporters of the Indonesian cleric, Rezig Shihab, were killed in a clash with security forces on Monday.
Jakarta Police Chief Fadil Omran told reporters that the crash occurred just after midnight on a highway when a police car was attacked while chasing a car believed to be carrying supporters of the cleric, leading to an exchange of fire.
The police were investigating the controversial cleric for violating health protocols during the Coronavirus pandemic, after large gatherings to celebrate his return to the country last month from Saudi Arabia, where he was staying.
Cleric Shihab leads the Islamic Defense Front, a conservative group that has gained political influence in recent years. Shihab left Indonesia after facing charges of pornography and insulting the country’s ideology.
