The Chinese official People’s Daily newspaper reported that the former head of a Chinese state assets company, Lai Xiaomin, was executed for violating two laws, including creating a second family after his secret marriage.
The attitude of children to second marriage in China
Chinese law stipulates that children born from a second marriage are “illegitimate children”.
Besides the charge of polygamy, the Lai Xiaomin case is also one of the most prominent corruption cases in China, as the former member of the Communist Party, 58, requested bribes totaling $ 278 million from 2008 to 2018 when he was also one of the country’s top bankers.
Lai, who was the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Chinese Huarong Corporation, was sentenced on January 5 on charges of corruption and the combination of two wives, and the sentence was executed on Saturday, and the newspaper said he had met his close relatives before the death sentence.
And she continued, saying: None of the services provided by Lai in his years of work were sufficient to give him a less lenient punishment, but rather caused serious harm to society due to the crimes of bribery.
Lai made a detailed televised confession via state-run CCTV in January that showed footage of safes filled with cash in one of his Beijing homes as well as luxury cars and gold bars.
China death sentence data
The death sentence issued against any one of the harshest penalties for economic crimes in recent years, as life sentences, suspended executions, or two years imprisonment are often issued in corruption cases, but death sentences without an opportunity to delay execution have become rare in recent years.
China maintains data on its use of the death penalty confidential, but Amnesty International estimates that the country is one of the largest implementers of the death penalty in the world.
