The US ambassador to Saudi Arabia, John Abizaid, said, “The United States and the world need Saudi Arabia and its strategic capabilities to protect a vital part of the world.”
Abizaid stressed in the National Council for American-Arab Relations, “Many people say that America no longer needs Saudi Arabia, because the United States is now producing enough oil for it, and it no longer needs it.”
He added, “This saying does not work for me, because we really need Saudi oil in the global economy, and we need Saudi economic diversification for the benefit of the Gulf economy, and we need Saudi strategic capacity to protect a vital part of this world.”
The American ambassador pointed out that Saudi Arabia thinks about the future and does not retrace the past, stressing that he is trying to explain to the employees of the American embassy in Riyadh, the need for the United States to be the “first optional partner”, as they progress towards their plan to diversify and achieve the goals of Vision 2030.
He added, “This is largely in our interest, and in the interest of the developed world.”
